Wayne Lloy 2000 "Natural Senior Masters"

 

In just six months, 57-year-old Winnipeg bodybuilder Wayne Lloy completely overhauled his body and is now aiming to compete in the 2004 Olympic Games.

 

Lloy will compete Saturday in the Neutron Natural Millennium Cup Championship bodybuilding competition in Oshawa -- his fifth show since last June when he essentially emerged from his chrysalis.

 

Bodybuilding is already gaining official recognition as a sport by the International Olympic Committee largely on the lobbying of International Federation of Bodybuilding president Ben Weider, who is now focused on gaining demonstration status for 2004 in Athens. Lloy intends to be ready when it happens.

 

It has already been a long road for Lloy since January, 1999 when he visited friends in Florida and discovered he was "too embarrassed to wear shorts or a T-shirt on the beach."

 

"I had been travelling in India for three years where I became a strict vegetarian and when I came back, I discovered fast food, got reacquainted with my mother's cooking, I ballooned up and was looking pretty bad," said Lloy, who at 5-foot-6 1/2 weighed in at 205 pounds at that time.

It turned out that weight was too low and since then Lloy, who trains out of Winnipeg's Premier Fitness, has maintained a non-competition weight of 165-170 pounds and competes in the 155-160 pounds weight range.

 

Lloy, who owned a health food store and has had a lifetime interest in natural medicine, is vehemently opposed to performance-enhancing drugs. He uses only diet supplements and "Scalarwave Structured Water™," a new hydration product which is also one of his sponsors, and competes solely in "natural" bodybuilding events. These are events, mostly in the USA but beginning to gain popularity in Canada, in which all competitors must take a polygraph test prior to competing and are subject to immediate urine testing after the contest if they place in the top three in their weight or age class. Lloy, who placed third inhis first show and then took first in all three after that, has been polygraphed and urine-tested four times in the past 16 months.

 

"Your body is like a shrine and exercise is phenomenal for keeping your body fit and young," Lloy said. "This (bodybuilding) is really very healthy for the body. The only time it's difficult is three to four weeks before a contest when your dieting is very strict.

 

Lloy's daughter Carlene Marshall, a 29-year-old mother of three, will compete in Oshawa in the same competition as Lloy, pursuing her professional card. Lloy said he hopes to compete in about two shows a year to maintain a competition-ready physique until 2004.

 

"I want to be ready for it, to compete in 2004 (Olympics) if bodybuilding gets in. I'll only be 61 then," Lloy said. "Either way, (if bodybuilding gets in or does not), it's an investment in my health. Every aspect of your life is enhanced.

 

"Truthfully, I have never felt better in my life. It's like this fountain of youth and once you have it, you don't want to lose it. It's this precious thing."
